A WARRIOR'S BEGINNING by Coach Jim Massaro

Being a professional in the fitness field and someone who has to be conscious of his weight, I, like many of you, have tried them all. That's right, one fad diet after another. And oh how I hate that word "diet." The real meaning of the word diet is the nutritional intake you consume daily, not the starvation, lack of will power, and suffering you probably associate with losing weight. But with this erroneous meaning so ingrained in our memory banks, we are setting ourselves up for failure before we even start. Look around and you will see a society getting more and more obese every day. We may be bombarded by quick fix and surefire "diets" that guarantee results, but while most of them do provide some quick weight loss, they do not offer the lifetime results that we need to live a really healthy life. There are only a few things in life that we are in control of and our health should be our number one priority. Without good health, nothing else matters!

Back in November of 2003, I attended a strength and conditioning clinic given by John Davies of Renegade Training. I knew John for about a year at that time, and I knew him to be a man of integrity. So when he mentioned that he was bringing Ori Hofmekler, the author of THE WARRIOR DIET to speak to us, I suspected this was something special. After listening to Ori lecture, I knew for sure that my nutritional habits would never be the same. I finally realized that I could take control and lead a healthy lifestyle without much difficulty.

In January of 2004 I began my quest to live a healthy lifestyle and to rid myself of unwanted fat. I started a series of conversations with Ori, learning the principals of the Warrior Diet and how to apply them to myself. At this point in time (just after getting through the holidays) I was weighing in at 252 lbs., with 23.8 percent body fat. This was not the condition I wanted to be in. So, with that said, I went to work.

During the first week it was explained to me that I had to detox my body. After years of eating the wrong things, it was time to cleanse my liver so it could work more efficiently. This is where the fat burning processes begin. In the first week you stay away from animal products, eating foods that are not too taxing on the liver so it can work on cleaning itself.

Weeks two and three we introduced the body to forced adaptation to fat fuel, and forced adaptation to carb fuel. Oh my God, there is that deadly word in the diet industry: CARBS! Remember, they are not the enemy. Carbs play an important role in the biological process. Fat, protein and carbs are needed in order for the body to perform in the manner that it is meant to.

As the weeks and months went by, the fat started to melt off my body. My energy level went through the roof. I usually work a 12-hour day as a personal trainer. I am moving weights or demonstrating exercises, with my workout squeezed in there too, and I had no problem at all performing my tasks.

Six months after I set out on my Warrior lifestyle, I was down to 218 lbs., with 14.3 percent body fat. And I had never felt healthier. I felt good from the inside out.

This past spring I took part in the first Warrior Diet Certification out in California. Along with colleagues from around the world, I had the privilege of spending three days with Ori learning all about the plan and how we can help others. The Warrior Diet is not just about proper food choices but about exercises too; the goal is to create the healthiest lifestyle you can possibly imagine. I still see myself as a work in progress, but with the power of the warrior inside me. I know that this time the job will get done.
